Honoring the Legacy of the Ogoni Nine
A Historic Three-Day Convening | 30th Anniversary Commemoration

Join us for a three-day gathering to honor the Ogoni Nine—nonviolent leaders, led by Ken Saro-Wiwa, who gave their lives fighting against the destruction of Ogoniland and the systemic injustices faced by their people.

 

Thirty years later, we reignite a global call to action for:

— Justice and Accountability —

— Environmental Restoration of Ogoniland —

 — Equitable Development in the Niger Delta —

9:00 AM – 10:00 AM - Registration & Welcome Reception — Attendees sign in and receive programs. — Light refreshments and background music showcasing Nigerian/African diaspora culture. — Networking opportunities and resource tables highlighting Ogoni activism.

10:00 AM – 10:30 AM - Opening Ceremony & Welcome Remarks — MC Introduction and acknowledgment of partners. — Traditional Ogoni prayer. — Welcome address by a local leader or human rights advocate. — Overview of the Ogoni Nine’s legacy.

10:30 AM – 11:15 AM - Keynote Address: "The Ogoni Nine: A Legacy of Resistance, Human Rights, and Environmental Justice" — Delivered by renowned scholar and activist. — Reflection on the global impact of the Ogoni Nine. — Discussion on environmental destruction, social justice, and health equity.

11:15 AM – 12:15 PM - Panel Discussion 1: Advancing Effective Public Health Policy for Environmental Justice — Experts in environmental law and international human rights discuss policy strategies for change. — Focus on health consequences of oil pollution. — Speakers from global health organizations and Ogoni health advocates.

12:15 PM – 1:15 PM - Networking Lunch & Informal Discussion — Traditional Nigerian cuisine. — Thematic discussion tables on health equity, social justice, and advocacy.

1:15 PM – 2:15 PM - Panel Discussion 2: Building Strong Communities: Developing Local Leaders and Expanding Economic Opportunity. — Strong communities are built on empowered individuals and inclusive systems. This panel brings together grassroots leaders, development practitioners, and policy influencers to explore how cultivating leadership within communities and aligning it with targeted socio-economic interventions can unlock long-term development. — Role of education, energy access, entrepreneurship, and innovation as key socio-economic enablers. — How community-led initiatives, when supported by the right infrastructure and partnerships, can address systemic challenges such as unemployment, inequity, and environmental degradation

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM - Panel Discussion 3: Legacy and Leadership: A Roundtable with Past Presidents of MOSOP USA. — This roundtable convenes past Presidents of MOSOP USA for a historic and forward-looking conversation on leadership, legacy, and the future of Ogoni advocacy in the diaspora. As leaders who have each carried the mantle of service, their perspectives are vital in understanding the organization's evolution, its challenges, and the pathways to greater impact. — Explore models for sustained engagement of former leaders beyond their time in office

4:00 PM – 4:45 PM - Break / Networking / Refreshments

4:45 PM – 5:30 PM - Cultural Performance: Songs of Resistance, Hope, and Social Change — Traditional and contemporary music, spoken word, and dance

5:30 PM – 6:00 PM - Candlelight Vigil & Moment of Silence Honoring the Ogoni Nine with candles, music, and reflection.

8:00 PM – 10:00 PM - Evening Fellowship & Informal Networking — Informal gathering, distribution of resource materials, and continued celebration.
